Shopping Without Interruptions: How EKO Market Operates During Power Outages

Despite a new wave of power outages caused by Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, the nationwide supermarket chain EKO Market continues to operate steadily. The company prepared in advance for potential disruptions and now fully ensures the autonomous operation of its stores.
Generators in Every Store
According to Denys Pohorielov, Chief Operating Officer of EKO Market, all retail outlets in the chain are equipped with generators, while key locations have more powerful units installed that can supply not only the stores themselves but also tenants and communication facilities.
“We have fully prepared for possible energy supply restrictions. All our stores are equipped with generators for autonomous operation. In a number of locations, more powerful units have been installed to additionally support tenants and mobile communication stations. We operate under a continuous supply procedure, so we never face ‘empty tanks’,” Denys Pohorielov says.
He adds that the chain has established a clear system for diesel refueling and real-time load monitoring. This makes it possible to maintain stable operations even during prolonged outages.
“We have an оперативe refueling schedule — in fact, it is a continuous process. We understand that it is important for customers to have access to food and essential goods at any time, so our main task is to ensure the stability of every store,” he notes.
Blackouts Without Queues or Panic
Store staff report that during power outages, customers remain calm, as they already know that everything at EKO Market operates reliably.
A cashier at one of the chain’s supermarkets recalls that when the power went out and the generator switched on a few minutes later, no one in the sales area was confused.
“Customers calmly continued paying for their purchases; some even joked that ‘the lights never go out at EKO.’ It was clear that people felt relieved because they know that, no matter the circumstances, we keep working,” she says.
Employees note that power outages in previous years, along with thorough preparation, have taught everyone to respond calmly and continue working, as management had prepared well in advance for blackout scenarios.
A Focus on Energy Independence
The company emphasizes that the current energy situation requires retailers not only to be technically ready, but also to manage logistics and service flexibly.
“During blackouts, we face challenges typical for the entire market: the need to modernize certain systems, adapt to current energy conditions, and manage fuel logistics. However, our company has already upgraded part of its equipment to more energy-efficient solutions and has clear action protocols in place for outages. This allows us to avoid shutdowns and maintain our usual level of service for our guests,” Denys Pohorielov concludes.
At present, all EKO Market stores are capable of operating autonomously for extended periods. The duration depends on local load levels and refueling schedules, but experience from previous years has shown that the chain can withstand even prolonged periods without centralized power supply.
EKO Market emphasizes that the most important thing is for people to always be able to purchase essential goods regardless of circumstances. Even in challenging times, the team continues to work so that customers feel care and confidence in simple things — light, warmth, and the ability to make everyday but essential purchases. Because EKO Market is always nearby, even when it’s dark around.
